Notably, Dusana's nose is large and crooked, the result of too many childish rows.
Dusana dresses plainly and comfortably, preferring trousers and tunics to skirts wherever possible. She wants function in her clothes and forgoes any sort of dangle or decoration that would impede her movement. Despite no real pride in her attire, Dusana takes excellent care of her clothes and belongings.
Never one to back down from a fight and always ready to throw herself into a fray, Dusana has developed a reputation for being confrontational. She doesn't go looking for fights, but she'll step in without hesitation if she sees one brewing. She has a strong sense of justice and will stand up for anyone who needs a voice, even if that means going toe to toe with her superiors. When she gets an idea in her mind, she doesn't let it go. She sets herself to task and keeps at it until her goal is accomplished. Her stubbornness isn't only tied to her work, though. It's a struggle to get her to change her mind once she's made up an opinion, to the point where facts and figures rarely convince her. She often needs to experience the consequences of her choices before she'll admit she was wrong.
Dusana deeply cares for people, even if she comes across as stoic and unfriendly. She's not demonstrative with affection, but she still feels intensely. She falls into infatuation quickly and will form bonds of friendships prematurely. She has a deep desire to be with people, to belong to them, so she latches onto those who show her kindness with unshakable fealty. Dusana is quick to share her resources, splitting her rations or giving away tools to those who need it, often to her own detriment. She puts others before herself and gets a sense of warmth and pride from doing so. She enjoys taking care of others.
For all her bravado, Dusana lacks confidence in herself. She doesn't believe she has worth beyond being a weyr drudge and prefers to help raise others up than focus on herself. She often surprised when people return her admiration and affection, and gets flustered when faced with reciprocated friendship... or worse yet, feelings. She doesn't believe she'll amount to much and has no aspirations for grandeur. Her only desires are being better able to protect her weyr and its people, and it's for this reason that she's attempted to stand as Shigan's clutches. She has no desire to being a wingleader or a queen rider, but she'd like to take up arms against thread and keep her people safe.
She cares deeply about her half-sister, Elise, who shares Dusana's father and was raised by the same foster mother.
Because of her desire to protect her weyr, Dusana stands at every clutch Shigan produces, and every time she's denied a bond she's further dismayed. But the embarrassment of going unchosen doesn't stop her from trying. As she gets closer to aging out, she's becoming more and more resigned that she's just not worthy of a dragon.
Hermina and Dusana help their weyr through threadfall.
Story contains description of wounds.
Hermina and Dusana return from Istabitha with a single dragon: Hermina's brown Kalapatith. The trio drift apart because of Hermina's weyrling lessons and a search rider from a different reality of pern visits Shigan weyr.
