Personality
caution keeps you livingChant understands the harsh realities of her world and she will do anything within her power to avoid them. Now that she's found a home and safety, she rarely leaves the weyr. Hiding indoors deep beneath the earth shields her from threadfall, although she can always feel it in the marrow of her bones. Her strange, unwelcome connection with thread drives her cowardice and has left her torn. She's well impressing a dragon would protect her mind from the whispering thread, but in turn she'd be forced to fight it.
Chant is always on the lookout for danger and constantly assesses her options before making a decision. Her keen eye has granted her a gift for reading people. She picks up ticks and tells with ease and uses this to her advantage, beguiling and manipulating others for her benefit. She's not unkind, but her caution and cowardice drives her need to control all social situations.
From her roots in a small, isolated community and her experiences with threadfall, many of Shigan's inhabitants consider Chant to be rather superstitious. She has a plethora of rituals she utilizes to keep herself safe and believes she's capable of some minor divination. She's usually right when she says threadfall is coming, so perhaps there's something to her magical thinking.
Background
Born to a small, coastal cothold far from the shadow of any weyr, Chant experienced the horrors of threadfall firsthand. Unprepared for thread after a long interval, Chant's hometown was all but destroyed when the red star returned. Chant survived by fluke- fleeing to the beach and taking cover in a small cavern. While she hid, she could hear it - the voices of the thread speaking as it annihilated her home and family.Chant was rescued by dragon riders from Shigan shortly after. Given the choice to return to Shigan Weyr or be dropped off at a hold, she chose Shigan. The voices of the thread were quieter when she was around dragons.
