Once a showboating teenage asshole with a secret heart of gold, Halen has suffered serious losses in his life and the misery dragged him down. Halen is deeply depressed and blames himself for the loss of his son. He's isolated himself in his den, quit his job as a scout, and spends most of his time in solemn contemplation. He is surly and straight forward, never afraid to curse someone out or punch 'em in the face if they deserve it. His gruff attitude has only gotten worse with his depression.

Halen will never turn down someone who truly needs his help, though. Despite the self-enforced isolation, Halen is deeply extroverted and loves company. He misses the evenings he'd spend laughing with friends, joking and rough housing with his fellow scouts. He has endless empathy for troubled souls and an unwavering sense of justice.

History

Halen comes from a long line of well-admired scouts. He was positive of his role as a young foal and when he met Jerram - a neighboring noul born the same season, also from a line of scouts - the race was on! The two were nigh inseparable as children, and completely insufferable. The two became arrogant show boaters as teenagers, spurring each other on to be the best and catch the eye of all the pretty young does. They even took their grandfather tree quests together.

It wasn't long after joining the scouts that Halen met Tallulah, a pretty palomino doe, and finally settled down from his reckless playboy lifestyle. They were young lovers, idealistic and full of life, eager to start a family together. Conception for Tallulah was difficult, and as the years went on without a foal, their relationship became strained. Halen never strayed from his mate, but the bond between them was tense.

Until, one autumn, Tallulah gave birth to a beautiful cremello colt, gangly legs and bright eyes. Halen's heart burst with love for his son. He spent as much time as he could with his foal, proving to be a playful, exuberant father, if a little gruff from time to time. Unfortunately, the life of a scout is busy and days went by where Halen was too tired to do much more than curl up in his den and sleep. Still, he adored his son and doted on him constantly.

To fix the lack of time he got to spend with Axl, Halen began bringing him along on simple scouting missions. Once his colt was old enough to keep his feet under him properly, it was no issue at all for him to follow his father along and stay quiet. They'd done this for months without incident, sometimes accompanying Jerram on his patrols, sometimes just the two of them.

It all came crashing down in barrens, days from Axl's first birthday. The patrol was routine, keep to the ground and wander the paths, eyes open for predators and pitfalls. Axl was good at following in his father's footsteps, they'd done this dozens of times before. But this time was different. A shriek of metal and a SNAP of beam struck Halen from overhead. He glanced up to watch a noulicorn leap from a rickety platform and send it careening down to the ground below.

The platform plummeted toward Axl. Halen shouted and leaped for him, but it was too late. The metal sheet crashed into his foal. Halen tore the debris away, heart hammering with fear. Axl was alive but badly injured. He scooped the foal onto his back and raced for Homewood.

By the time he reached a healer, Axl was too far gone. He died before they could summon an ascended. When the ascended did show, Halen begged them to resurrect his foal. He was just a kid. He'd barely been dead! They had the power.

He was denied. It was forbidden to resurrect a noulicorn, no matter how tragic the death.

Halen dragged himself home to Tallulah to deliver the news.

Their relationship fell apart soon after that. Halen didn't return to scouting missions and fell into a deep depression. Tallulah couldn't take care of herself and Halen after the death of their son, so she left him. Halen has no ill feelings toward her because of this.

Now, Halen spends his time alone, in a new den at the edge of Homewood.
