Albrek desperately wants to be more than the son of farmers. He's wickedly intelligent and applies himself studiously to everything he does. His yearning to be the best created a haughty competitive streak that cost him many friends in the candidate barracks. Which is fine by him. Albrek can be a little elitist about his social group and mostly keeps to the top of the class.

What might have started as a means of guarding the competition has turned into true, deep friendships - he's close and intensely loyal to Heilwi and Gebhard. The three are nigh inseparable. They push each other hard, will each other to tackle grueling tasks, and clean each other up when the ordeal is over. As devoted and loving as they are to one another, the trio has become quite a clique and could do with some healthy separation.

Beyond his close friends, Albrek is dedicated to Shigan Weyr. He wants to be a great dragon rider - a wing leader, even. He shows deference to the riders of Shigan and is deeply respectful of the dragons themselves. The strangeness of Shigan's dragons only makes them more alluring. Attaching his mind to something "Other" is appealing in a grotesque way Albrek doesn't wish to analyze.

Albrek's priorities are power and prestige, and he often overlooks minor cruelties when he envisions a greater good. Albrek himself is not heartless. He's particularly fond of small animals and goes out of his way to spoil any visiting firelizards. He has a deep love of fairytales and children's stories, bolstered by his own creative talents. Albrek hates how much he enjoys quiet, cozy comforts. Perhaps, with age and experience, he will allow himself to chase happiness instead of rank.

History

Parents are holders, who left their toiling life on a farmstead to live at Shigan Weyr instead. Albrek was only a young child when they moved to the weyr, but he has several fond memories of playing in wheat fields as a boy. He feels turmoil over his nostalgia, believing himself better than a country bumpkin farm child. He's going to be a dragon rider, fight thread (and worse), and make his home a safer place for everyone. He has no time to daydream about frog catching or hide-and-seek in golden wheat grown tall above his head. He has studies to focus on.
