Gruff and guarded toward other weyrbrats her age, but soft and kindly toward newly searched kids, Heilwi is a testament to her upbringing. She despises those who squander opportunities and is cautious about expanding her social circle. But more importantly, she wants no newly searched child to feel as lost and alone as she did when she first moved to Shigan. She likes kids and wants to be certain the next generation of dragon riders is the best they can be.
Toward her peers (with a couple notable exceptions) she is cold and callous, always guarded about her own emotions and unwilling to form friendships. She has a deep, loving, and unerringly loyal relationship with Albrek and Gelhard, but spends little time with other classmates.
She's intelligent - cunning, shrewd, and observant. Few things go unnoticed and she has no qualms striking out at weaknesses. Both of her peers and her dear friends. They won't learn if they're not shown their errors. Heilwi is opportunistic, but honest. She never cheats. How can she know where she ranks if she doesn't earn her place honestly? But she's not afraid to cut down classmates that don't show promise. She can't stand tomfoolery and will do what she can to get potential candidates demoted to drudge if she doesn't think they're worthy of a dragon. Nevermind that it's the dragons' job to decide that. Heilwi doesn't expect kindness or kinship from anyone outside her triumvirate, and would consider any olive branch with suspicion.
Despite her cold demeanor and often cruel actions, Heilwi doesn't hold grudges. She's quick to forgive and will help anyone that needs it, as long as she doesn't believe they're compromising the efficiency of the weyr.
She felt out of place, orphaned and abandoned by her mother. Not really a child of riders and not actually "searched" either. Heilwi became determined to prove herself worthy of a dragon. She refused to remain a drudge.
Albrek, Gebhard, and Heilwi form an inseparable triumvirate of over-achieving students looking to make history together.
